About Amarillo
Park Central is located in Amarillo, a hub of business, faith, and culture for the entire Texas Panhandle. Amarillo plays a significant role in the ranching & farming and oil & gas industries. The downtown area of Amarillo—surrounding Park Central—is in the midst of an extensive revitalization known as “Center City.”
Climate
At an altitude of 3,672 feet and with around 20 inches of annual precipitation, Amarillo boasts four distinct seasons and more than 270 sunny days a year. We have low humidity and some of the cleanest air in the country.
Population
We’ve grown from a population under 500 people in 1890 to a metropolitan area of more than 225,000 people. Though we cover 88.4 square miles across Potter and Randall counties, you can usually drive from one side of Amarillo to the other in less than 20 minutes.
Parks and Recreation
The City of Amarillo oversees 58 parks and playgrounds, four city swimming pools, 32 miles of jogging trails, and two world-class skating parks—enough to entertain all ages, from great-grandparents to great-grandchildren. Transportation
Amarillo is conveniently located at the intersection of Interstates 40 and 27 in the middle of the Texas Panhandle. Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport serves the city with more than 50 daily arrivals and departures on American Eagle, Continental Express, and Southwest Airlines. Faith
Churches of several Christian denominations are located within walking distance of Park Central. These include: Central Church of Christ, First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Polk Street United Methodist, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Fun Facts
- Our Amarillo National Bank is the largest family-owned bank in the nation.
- Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport has the 3rd largest runway in the world and is designated as an alternate landing site for the space shuttle.
- Amarillo means “yellow” in Spanish. The name was probably chosen because of the color of the soil in nearby Amarillo Creek.
- Famous Amarilloans include legendary actress Cyd Charisse, cattle rancher Charles Goodnight (inventor of the chuck wagon) and opera singer Mary Jane Johnson.
